As we near the end of 2023, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank-you to the analytical community in the U.K and Ireland who have played their part in supporting CAMS. A special thanks goes of course to ACTF for their continued and generous financial support which has, together with our industry and academic members co-funded over 40 programmes in CAMS phase 1. We started our journey hoping to connect across the analytical community and to support and grow new talent which is connected into industry - and it really does feel like we are starting to do that. Our journey now continues into CAMS phase 2 and we are already signing up new members. If you want to be part of our journey - please get in touch. If you want to support events or be a sponsor, just want to be connected into the network or want to be a corporate member - we are open for business. CAMS is your community and we need you if we are to achieve our vision. If you have meetings or jobs to advertise or want to find collaborators - we are here to help you connect. Look out for our CAMS project challenges in Q1 2024 - which will support (co-fund) PhD and postdoc research projects - we hope to welcome new academic institutions through these calls.

So- for now, we will wish you a happy, healthy and restful Christmas - and we will look forward to connecting with you in 2024.

Kirkbright bursary award is a prestigious annual award that assists a promising early career scientists of any nation to attend a recognised scientific meeting or visit a place of learning. The fund for this bursary was established in 1985 as a memorial to Professor Gordon Kirkbright in recognition of his contributions to analytical spectroscopy and to science in general.

Owing to the generosity of one of our former trustees, an eminent atomic spectroscopist, Professor Edward B.M. Steers, we are now able to award an annual Edward Steers bursary, in addition to the long standing Gordon Kirkbright bursary, to similarly assist a promising early scientist engaged in or utilising analytical spectroscopic techniques.

The ABS Trust defines early career as being either a student, or an employee in a non-tenured academic post or in industry, within 5 years of award of PhD excluding career breaks. The same conditions apply to each bursary.

Applications are invited for both the 2023 Gordon Kirkbright Bursary and the 2023 Edward Steers Bursary.

Although both funds are administered by the ABS Trust, the Kirkbright award is not restricted to spectroscopists, but is open to all involved with or utilising analytical science-based techniques.

The meeting, aimed to answer one overarching question: Is Separation Science in the UK on life support?, brought together UK and international experts in separation science to analyse the current state of the field in the UK and its future needs. “It is fantastic to see so many people both here in person, and online, which has shown that the sort of provocative title that we gave was exactly the right thing to do and the response it stimulated in our analytical community has been tremendous. I am looking forward to the ideas from the workshop and being able to condense these into a compelling narrative for funding which we can share with UKRI, professional societies and our analytical community in the UK and Ireland” Melissa Hanna-Brown, CAMS Chair said.

The morning presentations offered an insight into where separation science is now from a variety of different UK expert perspective from across Academia, Industry and Recruitment, as well as input from international researchers as why the separation science communities are thriving in their countries. In the afternoon, attendees took part in a workshop to discuss targeted questions to identify problems, mind-map ideas, and develop solutions to improve the state of Separation Science in the UK.

Separation Science is a frontline measurement tool in academia and across the chemical and bio industries, Prof. Schoenmakers, Professor Analytical Chemistry, University of Amsterdam who spoke at the event said, “If you don’t pay attention to analytical chemistry, this life, it can be very polluted; your food is not safe, your healthcare is mediocre. We cannot overestimate our importance of analytical sciences for industry and society and somehow it doesn’t come across and all this discussion today is why aren’t we taking it more seriously. It’s that message that we have to bring across,” he continued.

Outcomes and feedback from this event will help to identify specific actions that the Separation Science community can take now to address future needs, while highlighting longer term recommendations and requirements for the field with a view to encourage policy dialogue with funding and other bodies.

We are looking forward to welcoming the separation science community to our State of the Nation meeting next week at the RSC in London hosted by CAMS, The RSC Separation Science Group and the Chromatographic Society. This meeting won’t see plenary lecturers unveiling their new research advances but instead aims to strategically connect our separation science community and stakeholders so we can together, devise an advocacy pathway for underpinning future UK separation science funding, innovation and talent. If you are interested and want to join in the conversation, there are online seats available for the workshop elements and you can register here. The summarized output from this meeting will be presented at SinS IN Cardiff 2023 where more feedback will be invited, after which the combined output will be consolidated in a UK State of the Nation white paper with recommendations for UKRI and professional scientific societies. We hope you will join in the conversation and help us secure a bright future for separation science.

As we near the end of 2022, its worth reflecting back on our successes as a growing community. This year, we took a look as an executive board, at the work we had done in partnership with the ACTF who have co-funded the majority of our community work to date. When we examined our impact on the Analytical Measurement Science community in our first membership period, we found we had :

Co-funded 40 awards 14 new academic positions (8 of which are permanent); 19 Fellowships and 7 PhDs

Attracted a membership of 36 organisations (industrial, academic and educational/training)

Approximately 40 peer reviewed publications from our CAMS awardees with over 46 presentations on CAMS co-funded projects

Held numerous webinars for the community throughout the pandemic and three virtual annual conferences

Appointed co-chairs from industry and academia for each of our research themes (sensors and photonics; data analytics; complex mixtures & separations and novel instrumentation & techniques).

The above is a great start – and a huge thanks goes to all of the members who have embraced this community and are working together to connect and grow the identity of Analytical Measurement Science in the UK and Ireland. We are especially grateful to the ACTF and to the academic and industrial organisations who have invested in CAMS and who have recognised the value and potential CAMS has in strengthening the academic leaders and innovators of the future.

So – what about the future of CAMS? Well, we are pleased to say that ACTF continue to fund us through 2026, and so we move into our second membership period full of hope and with big plans to attract more industry and academic organisations to join us. In our second membership period, we will be focusing on growing the academics we have already co-funded and growing the community by welcoming new industrial and academic organisations who are interested in partnering on CAMS research innovation projects. We are also excited to announce that our co-funding packages for PhDs will increase for the second membership period which will, we hope attract new academic members. So – look out for some community networking opportunities in 2023 where you can liaise with our industry members to find synergistic research opportunities and then perhaps you will join us if you are not already a member. Remember, we are not trying to invent something new here – but rather – connect existing groups, organisations and bodies so that together we can go further.

Wishing you a happy Christmas, and a healthy and happy 2023.

Project Description:
Major food adulteration and contamination events occur with alarming regularity and are known to be
episodic, with the question being not IF but WHEN another large-scale food safety/integrity incident will
occur. The challenges of maintaining food security are recognized internationally, with the ever-increasing
scale and complexity of food supply networks leading to these networks becoming significantly more
vulnerable to fraud and contamination, thus increasing the potential for dysfunctionality.

As recently reviewed (Ellis et al. 2012) there are many analytical techniques that have been used for the
analysis of food for establishing authentication, adulteration, provenance as well as detecting food spoilage
and pathogens. However, most of these are laboratory-based measurements which mean transporting
the sample to the instrument. This major constraint needs to be addressed and it would be better if
samples can be analysed directly on site, so that appropriate action can be taken in a timely manner.

Raman and infrared spectroscopies are emerging as rapid on-site methods (so called “capable guardians”)
that allow “point-and-shoot” measurements (Ellis et al. 2015). This PhD project is to explore the application
of these methods for assessing the safety, provenance and integrity of feeds/foods/food ingredients.

In our research group we develop Raman and infrared for food security and applications and results can
be seen on our website (http://biospec.net/publications/) and recent examples include: portable through
bottle authentication of olive oil; the detection of the adulteration of coconut water; the detection of fake
spirit drinks and quantification of methanol added to spirits; and the detection and enumeration of food
pathogens on food, amongst other studies.

Rather than prescribe which areas to focus on, this PhD will be proactive and horizon scan for current and
up and coming areas that are threating the integrity of our food supply chains.

PhD Project Outputs:
• Horizon scanning of new food security threats.
• The assessment of a wide variety of Raman and infrared approaches that are either already
portable or portablisable.
• The incorporation of multivariate data analysis and ‘machine learning’ algorithms for unequivocal
detection and quantification of food fraud.
• The validation of this combined methodology.
• On-site testing of the delivered spectroscopy solutions.

Qualifications and Experience:
Candidates are expected to hold (or be about to obtain) a minimum upper second class honours degree
(or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related field. Candidates with a master’s degree in a related
area/subject, and experience in analytical sciences within biology are encouraged to apply.

Since the launch of CAMS in 2019, the network has attracted 37 members (15 industrial and 22 academic organisations) and to date has awarded/co-funded 2 analytical chairs, 7 lectureships, 6 postdocs, 5 PhDs across the UK and Ireland with its generous funding support from the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund and BEIS together with paid industry memberships.

The CAMS network is managed by an Executive and aided by other decision-making committees: The Industry Advisory Board (IAB), The Academic Measurement Science Research Institute (MSI which is yet to formally launch) and the Training Management Panel (BEAM). The CAMS Secretariat provides administrative support and co-ordination to the CAMS network and wider community members.

The executive and industry advisory board wish now to launch formally the Measurement Science Institute (a virtual institute) across our UK and Ireland network focussed on our 4 CAMS research themes:
