R2 CAMS State of the Nation – Separation Science – are we in trouble?

The community for Analytical Measurement Science (CAMS) is a network community that has a vision to ‘bridge industrial need with academic innovation, through facilitating scientific research partnerships, community building and training programmes’. CAMS has co-funded over 45 programmes since its launch and part of its work is to catalyse and broker the analytical community in coalescing around opportunity areas for analytical measurement science through ‘State of the Nation’ events. The first event held brought together learned professional societies, industry, instrument manufacturers, training organisations and academic organisations to discuss whether Separation Science is actually on Life Support. This panel discussion will cover some of the main components of that workshop and subsequent white paper work CAMS has been facilitating.
In this panel we will be discussing:
 i) recruitment into industry (ease/difficulty of)
ii) instrument manufacturer opinion and perspectives on skills and innovation needs for the future in separation science
iii) the role of separation science in societal grand challenges
iv) the big ticket innovation areas separation science needs to address
v) educational & training landscape – are we doing enough?
vi) International perspective – what can we learn from other countries?
