CAMS is an industry-led initiative aimed at promoting world-class analytical measurement science training, research, and innovation by bringing together a network of industrial and academic partners with interests in these fields. Since the launch of CAMS in 2019, the network has attracted 37 members (15 industrial and 22 academic organisations) and to date has awarded/co-funded 2 analytical chairs, 7 lectureships, 6 postdocs, 5 PhDs across the UK and Ireland with its generous funding support from the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund and BEIS together with paid industry memberships.
The CAMS network is managed by an Executive and aided by other decision-making committees: The Industry Advisory Board (IAB), The Academic Measurement Science Research Institute (MSI which is yet to formally launch) and the Training Management Panel (BEAM). The CAMS Secretariat provides administrative support and co-ordination to the CAMS network and wider community members.
The executive and industry advisory board wish now to launch formally the Measurement Science Institute (a virtual institute) across our UK and Ireland network focussed on our 4 CAMS research themes:
- Point of use sensors and photonics
- Complex mixtures, separations and detection
- Data analytics
- Novel instrumentation & techniques
As part of this launch, CAMS is seeking to appoint MSI co-leads for each theme (one industrialist and one academic). These appointments will be for a 3-year term. With support from the CAMS secretariat and MSI and IAB chairs, the appointed leads should expect to take an active role in the operation of the MSI, including (but not necessarily limited to):
- Continuing to raise awareness in their communities of CAMS and its aims and activities, and work with their communities to promote and encourage research in Analytical Measurement Science.
- Working to build on the existing strong links, and with the help of the IAB, initiate new links between academia and industry.
- Helping to shape the activities of the MSI and CAMS for the benefit of the Analytical Measurement Science community,
- Leading on the selection of awardees for the CAMS annual PhD/postdoc calls in their research theme. This will include helping to shape the calls, engaging with their community and encouraging applications, reviewing applications and, in consultation with the MSI chair, IAB and Executive, selecting the successful candidates.
- Organizing (with the help of the secretariat) quarterly (virtual) CAMS research theme meetings to:
- showcase CAMS research projects and cutting-edge scientific advances with the theme network.
- agree the priority scientific and technological opportunity areas where investment is needed, to help direct CAMS project funding.
- Leading one session of the CAMS annual conference dedicated to their research theme (in 2022 this can be more focused on chairing than full shaping given the timelines as the conference is mid-June)

- what experience they have to evidence that they are likely to be successful in the role
- how they will ensure that equality, diversity and inclusion is reflected in their theme’s activities.
- that they have discussed their application with their managers and provide information on any support their organisation will give them if they are appointed.
Shortlisted applicants should expect to have a short discussion with the EB, IAB and MSI chairs prior to appointments being announced on the CAMS website. Successful applicants should also expect to be able to provide confirmation from their employer’s organisation that they can be appointed.
These appointments are open to both CAMS members and individuals whose organisations are not currently part of the CAMS network.
