With the CAMS Ltd entity established in a flurry of end of year activity, it has been business as usual this month - continuing to assign the initial stakeholder contributions to build on the 3 lectureships, 10 fellowships and 3 post-doctoral positions being added through CAMS to the wider analytical family around the UK. Focus is shifting also towards the longer term sustain

CAMS Fellowship Awards 2019

The CAMS fellowship awards for 2019 have been announced. The purpose of the award is to assist early career analytical chemists within 5 years of their first full-time junior academic appointment at a UK or Irish HEI to establish their own independent analytical science research identity. Congratulations to this year’s recipients:

CAMS-UK Fellowships Closing date: 06 Sept 2019

The purpose of the CAMS-UK Fellowships (funded by the ACTF) is to assist early career analytical chemists within 5 years of their first, full-time, junior academic appointment at a UK or Irish HEI to establish their own independent analytical science research identity.  The Fellowships, which are valued at up to £30,000, may be used by Fellows in any way that advances the purpose of the Fellowship and of the ACTF.

The Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at Strathclyde University launches a new post graduate distance learning MSc in Chemical Technology and Management.  This 3 year part-time course (starting in September 2019), is targetted to people already working in the chemical, process and pharmaceutical industries who have their sights set on advancement to senior engineer/management roles.

Over a period of 20 years a number of best practice guides were produced under the UK’s Valid Analytical Measurement programme (VAM).  In the coming months we will be making some of these available on the CAMS website as we start to position CAMS as a key point of reference for analytical measurement scientists.

A one-day launch meeting for the CAMS-UK Industry Steering Panel is being held on Thursday 03 May 2018. 

At the meeting the CAMS-UK project will be outlined, followed by an interactive workshop designed to help shape both the top training thematic areas which would be most impactful for the Analytical Measurement community (cross-sector) as well as the top measurement challenges in the following themes:

1. Point of Use, Sensors and Photonics,
2. Data Analytics
3. Complex Mixtures, Separation and Detecti

The Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund (ACTF) exists to promote, assist and extend the science and study of Analytical Chemistry.  It has achieved this over many years in part through supporting research and investigation into all aspects of analytical chemistry development and by establishing and maintaining fellowships and studentships.  These activities are closely aligned with the aims of CAMS-UK.  Over several months, the CAMS-UK project has been discussed within the Royal Society of Chemistry

The timeline to the formal launch of CAMS-UK projects and training programmes in January 2019 has been announced.

The project journey to date has included the following notable activities:

• 19 Feb 2018: Meeting held by Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund in Burlington House, Piccadilly, London for Academic Institutions to hear more about the project and indicate interest in engagement;

• 8 Feb 2018: Current Tier 1 academic institutions meet to co-ordinate a CDT bid as part of Martin Synge Institute offerings;

• Jan 2018: Membership draft agreement finalised;

• Jan 2018: Current Tier 1 academic institutions meet

ACTF supports the case for CAMS-UK.  Details of the 7 year support programme will be finalised in October 2017.

Alan Handley will present the case for CAMS-UK to the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund (ACTF) trustees on 10 August.

The ACTF supports strategic activities of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Analytical Division in the areas of education & training and research.
